Midheaven Calculator
Enter your birth date, time and city to find your Midheaven sign, down to the degree.
Your Midheaven, written MC, is the point of the zodiac that was highest in the sky at the moment and place you were born. Astrologers read its sign as your public role: career, reputation and what you are known for. Finding it needs your birth date, an accurate birth time and your birthplace.
How the calculator works
Picture a line running from due south, up over your head, to due north. That line is your meridian. The zodiac is a band around the sky, and as the Earth turns, the whole band slides across the meridian once a day. The degree of the zodiac crossing the meridian at the moment you were born is your Midheaven.
The calculator converts your birth time to Universal Time using the time zone rules for your birthplace in that year. It then works out the local sidereal time, which is the astronomer's measure of how far the sky has turned at your longitude, and from that the zodiac degree on the meridian.
Why the birth time has to be accurate
All twelve signs cross the meridian in a day, so the Midheaven moves about one degree every four minutes. In the example below, ten minutes on the clock moves it by 2.3 degrees. A birth time rounded to the nearest hour can put the Midheaven in the wrong sign. The calculator shows what your result would be 15 minutes either side, so you can see how much room you have.
Why the place matters
Two people born at the same instant in different cities have different meridians. Moving 15 degrees of longitude east, about the width of one time zone, shifts the Midheaven by about half a sign. At the moment of the example below, the Midheaven over Chicago was 17°01′ Cancer; 15 degrees further east it was 1°13′ Leo.
A worked example
Take a birth at 2:30 pm on June 15, 1995 in Chicago. Chicago was on daylight time that day, five hours behind Universal Time, so the birth was at 19:30 UT. The Midheaven was 17°01′ Cancer and the Ascendant was 14°28′ Libra. The IC, the lowest point of the chart, is always opposite the Midheaven, at 17°01′ Capricorn.
The table follows the same day and city through the clock.
| Clock time | Midheaven | Ascendant |
|---|---|---|
| 12:00 am | 11°52′ Sagittarius | 26°30′ Aquarius |
| 2:00 am | 9°36′ Capricorn | 18°22′ Aries |
| 4:00 am | 8°06′ Aquarius | 2°18′ Gemini |
| 6:00 am | 9°00′ Pisces | 3°08′ Cancer |
| 8:00 am | 11°37′ Aries | 28°10′ Cancer |
| 10:00 am | 13°13′ Taurus | 21°36′ Leo |
| 12:00 pm | 12°20′ Gemini | 14°59′ Virgo |
| 2:00 pm | 10°03′ Cancer | 8°35′ Libra |
| 4:00 pm | 8°35′ Leo | 2°02′ Scorpio |
| 6:00 pm | 9°32′ Virgo | 25°22′ Scorpio |
| 8:00 pm | 12°09′ Libra | 19°42′ Sagittarius |
| 10:00 pm | 13°43′ Scorpio | 18°19′ Capricorn |
The Midheaven advances by close to 30 degrees in each two-hour step. The Ascendant is less even: at Chicago's latitude some signs rise in little more than an hour and others take about two and a half.
Midheaven and the tenth house
In the house systems most charts use, such as Placidus, the Midheaven is the start of the tenth house, so the two are spoken of together. In whole sign houses, the tenth house is simply the tenth sign from your Ascendant, and the Midheaven can fall in the ninth, tenth or eleventh. Either way the Midheaven itself, the sign and degree this calculator gives, is the same.
What each Midheaven sign means
These are the traditional readings of the Midheaven by sign.
Midheaven in Aries
A Midheaven in Aries is read as a public life built on initiative. People with it are said to do best where they can start things, compete and lead from the front, and to chafe in roles where they must wait for permission.
Midheaven in Taurus
With the Midheaven in Taurus, the traditional reading is a reputation for steadiness. Work that produces something tangible suits it: building, finance, food, craft, land. Progress tends to be slow and to last.
Midheaven in Gemini
A Gemini Midheaven points to a career carried by words and ideas. Writing, teaching, selling, media and anything that needs a quick mind belong here. Astrologers often note more than one line of work running at once.
Midheaven in Cancer
The Midheaven in Cancer is associated with roles that look after people: care, food, housing, family businesses, counselling. The public image is protective, and the line between work and home life is usually thin.
Midheaven in Leo
With a Leo Midheaven, the reading is a wish to be seen for what you make. Performance, leadership, entertainment and anything with an audience fit the sign. Recognition matters, and so does pride in the work.
Midheaven in Virgo
A Midheaven in Virgo suggests a name made through skill and usefulness. Analysis, health, editing, craft and systems are the classic fields. The reputation is for getting details right, sometimes at the cost of taking credit.
Midheaven in Libra
The Midheaven in Libra is linked with work done through other people: law, diplomacy, design, mediation, partnerships. The public manner is fair and agreeable, and success tends to come with a collaborator.
Midheaven in Scorpio
A Scorpio Midheaven is read as a vocation that goes below the surface. Research, investigation, psychology, medicine, finance and crisis work are typical. The public image is private, and often formidable.
Midheaven in Sagittarius
With the Midheaven in Sagittarius, astrologers expect a career that widens horizons. Teaching, travel, publishing, law and belief all fit. The reputation is for vision and candour more than for patience with routine.
Midheaven in Capricorn
The Midheaven in Capricorn sits in its traditional home, since Capricorn is the tenth sign. It is read as ambition worked out over decades: management, institutions, building a name by taking on responsibility.
Midheaven in Aquarius
An Aquarius Midheaven points to a public role that breaks from the expected. Technology, science, activism and community work are common readings. The reputation is for independence and for thinking ahead of the group.
Midheaven in Pisces
With a Pisces Midheaven, the traditional fields are art, music, healing, faith and care for people in difficulty. The career path is rarely a straight line, and the public image can be hard for others to pin down.
Questions people ask
Can I find my Midheaven without a birth time?
No. Over one day the Midheaven passes through every sign, so without a time it could be anywhere. If you only know roughly when you were born, enter your best estimate and look at the 15-minute comparison to see whether the sign holds.
What is the IC?
The IC, or Imum Coeli, is the point directly opposite the Midheaven: the part of the zodiac that was beneath your feet. Astrologers read it as home, family and private life, the counterweight to the public Midheaven.
Is the Midheaven the same as my rising sign?
No. The rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac degree on the eastern horizon. The Midheaven is the degree on the meridian, roughly a quarter of the sky away. The calculator shows both so you can check them against a full chart.
Why does another calculator give me a different Midheaven?
Almost always because of the time zone. If two calculators disagree by about 15 degrees, one of them has applied daylight saving time and the other has not. This calculator tells you the offset from Universal Time it used, so you can check it against what the clocks were doing when you were born.
My town is not in the city list. What should I do?
Choose the nearest larger city in the same time zone. A place 50 kilometres east or west changes the Midheaven by about half a degree, which rarely affects the sign.
